Outline: The formula simul iustus et peccator is a shorthand for the nucleus and heart of the Reformation. The concept of simul takes readers directly to the heart of Lutheran theology, justification by faith alone; at the same time it constitutes a thought pattern which is a characteristic feature of much of Lutheran theology. The concept, which implies a tension or even a paradox, appears to play a significant role in other areas of theological reflection.
