Melanchthon and Patristic Thought : The Doctrines of Christ and Grace, The Trinity and The Creation
Overview: One of the most interesting and intriguing aspects of Melanchthon is that as young Reformer he dismissed expositions about the doctrines of the Trinity, the nature of Christ, the incarnation and the creation as speculative, whilst later on he was a strong defender of these Patrisctic doctrines. First Melanchthon's views on the difference between futile speculation and useful knowledge are analysed. Then the author tries to shed some light on the question of the continuity and discontinuity in the thought of Melanchthon by analysing his attitude towards the Fathers of the Church. He tries to determine what knowledge Melanchthon had of the Fathers, how he used this knowledge, and how far his appeal to the Fathers is justified by Patristic theology itself. The book ends with some reflections on Reformation and Patristic thought and the function of tradition in Christian theology.
