Zwingli's Thought : New Perspectives
Overview: Zwingli has been considered by some a 'humanistic rationalist' and by others a Reformer who mixed religion with politics. In fact, Ulrich Zwingli was a typical representative of the entire Reformation movement in the Swiss and South German cities. His once contested interpretation of the Lord's Supper as a celebration of community has been either misinterpreted or forgotten. This volume offers for the first time in English an overview of Zwingli's thought in relation to other Reformers. In additions, it contains a more thorough discussion of several central topics of his theology, including his views on the political and social responsibility of the Church, and his characteristic version of the doctrine of election. The analysis of Zwingli's relationship to Erasmus and the investigation of his influence in England and Scotland offer some starting conclusions. The author investigates the biblical and patristic foundations and motifs of Zwingli's thought. Moreover, he delineates both the role of Zwingli's doctrine of the Lord's Supper in theological discussions with this contemporaries, and the social and religious character of his entire Reformation. It is not only the author's intention to show the broader historical significance of Zwingli's thought, but also, its contemporary implications.
