Land of the Bible, The : A Historical Geography
Overview: This is a historical geography of the land of the Bible that brings together, for the benefit of both the scholar and the general reader, the vast mass of research and exploration that has been done on a country whose origins now fascinate an educated public as never before, the author, himself a scholar of great repute, has converted the details of his own research and that of his colleagues, past and present, into a flowing account of the history of the country and its people from its earliest beginnings up to the onset of the New Testament era. This book fills a gap in scholarly literature. Here, assembled for the first time between two covers, are all available records and geographical descriptions of Palestine in the Canaannite and Israelite periods. The Hebrew (biblical and extra-biblical), Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian and other sources are described and critically evaluated in the light of archaeology, and with a view to summarizing the vast amount of literature up to now scattered among numerous books and journals. Many ideas and studies previously available only in Hebrew, including some of the fruits of the author's own research, have also been built into the book and are for the first time brought to the attention of the general reader.
